For those, who sometimes wonder if E-Mail is really a good collaboration tool, I found this deepening story from Wales, where Swansea Council became lost in translation when it was looking to halt heavy goods vehicles using a road in the Morriston area. Because all official road signs have to be bilingual, they e-mailed its in-house translation service for the Welsh version of: “No entry for heavy goods vehicles. Residential site only”.
BBC reports, that after receiving the prompt answer, the offcials set the wheels in motion to create the large sign in both languages. Their mistake: they didn´t check the translation. Until Welsh speaking pedestrians began pointing out the embarrassing error.
